GROW Projects Showcase S2S Forecasting for Early Warning at COP30

Posted on November 27, 2025

The GROW projects SPS Blue Nile and OUTLAST presented cutting-edge seasonal to sub-seasonal (S2S) forecasting techniques at the UN World Climate Summit COP30 in Belém. On 12 November 2025, they organised the side event “Early Warning, Anticipatory Action and Risk Insurance for Proactive Risk Management” alongside African partners, including the IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC) and the African Centre of Meteorological Application for Development (ACMAD). In his presentation “Early Warning for Droughts with S2S Predictions: Current Achievements and Regional Co-design in Africa”, Prof. Dr. Harald Kunstmann, Project Coordinator of SPS Blue Nile, highlighted the significance of these forecasting methods for proactive climate action in Africa. He also subsequently summarised the key findings in  interviews with  German TV news channels BR24 Rundschau and HR “Alle Wetter!”.
